Gaëtan Poitras

At the Grand Falls General Hospital, September 6, 2020, Mr. Gaetan Poitras of Grand Falls passed away at the age of 81 years.  He was the husband of Sylvette Poitras.  Born at Saint-Andre in 1939, he was a son of the late Hector and Marie-May (Marquis) Poitras and step-son of the late Eveline (Gagnon) Poitras whom his father married after the passing of Gaetan's mother in 1939.

Gaetan was very active in his community. He was a 3rd-degree member of the Knights of Columbus of Saint-Andre Council 7222;  he was a municipal councillor for the Town of Grand Falls for nine years; he entertained many with his pontoon on the St. John River for 20 years; had his grocery store at the location where McDonald's Restaurant is currently located and later had his business, Viandes GP Meats, in the basement of his home for several years.  He was an avid ski-dooer, hunter, fisherman and years ago, played hockey for the St-Andre Canadiens.

He is survived by his wife Sylvette, two sons, Michel (Audrey) and Sylvain (Marcella), both of Grand Falls, two granddaughters, Alexa (Andre Levesque) and Danika (Claude-Eric Laplante) and great granddaughter, Haylie, as well as his siblings, all children of Hector and Eveline: Cecilia Poitras of Chambly, Quebec, Paulette Poitras-Aubé (Adrien) of Saint-Vallier, Quebec, Jean-Yves of Laval, Quebec, Marcel-Marie of Quebec City, Francois of Saint-Georges-de-Beauce, Quebec and Hector Jr. of Saint-Andre, as well as several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his daughter, Johanne at age 16, a brother, Gilles-Marie Poitras (late Rose-Marie) and a sister, Jeanne d'Arc Poitras.

Resting at O'Regan's Funeral Home, 515 Everard Daigle Blvd., Grand Falls.

A Liturgy of the Word Celebration will be held at the funeral home with family and close friends in attendance.  Interment will be in the Saint-Andre Cemetery.

Due to the restrictions imposed by the Dept. of Health, attendees will be contacted by the family.
