Père Lucien Lévesque

1931-2024

Père Lucien Lévesque

At the Falls Villa (Grand Falls Manor), December 18, 2024, Father Lucien Levesque passed away at the age of 93 years. Born at Saint-André in 1931, he was the last surviving child of the late François ''Frank'' and Agnès (Cyr) Levesque.

He completed his primary education at the school in his native village (1937-1942); at the Hôtel-Dieu Academy of Saint-Basile (1942-1945); his secondary education at Bathurst College (1945-1950); at the college of Sainte-Anne in Church Point, NS. (1950-1953) and his theological studies at the Saint-Coeur de Marie seminary in Halifax (1953-1957).

He was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1957, in the church of his native parish, Saint-André, by Msgr J. Roméo Gagnon. Subsequently, he was successively vicar in Drummond (1957-1958); in Clair (1958-1963); in Saint-Léonard-Ville (1963-1965); at Sainte-Anne de Madawaska (1965-1968); parish priest of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes (1968-1974); did specialized studies in religious sociology at the University of Montreal (1974-1977); was pastor of Rivière-Verte (1977-1989) and Lac-Baker (1989-1996).

After a few months of rest, he was celebrant at the parish of Saint-André then moderator of the pastoral animation team of the same parish (1998-2000); subsequently, he retired and continued to exercise occasional ministry in the Grand Falls and Southern Victoria areas.

The word "retirement" was a bit of an exaggeration for Father Lucien, because he became Chaplain of the Falls Villa in Grand Falls from 2005 to 2022. He was also Chaplain of the Daughters of Isabella, of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree of Council 7222 and 4th Degree of Assembly 1907 of Saint-André, the Boy Scout movement, the Saint-André Volunteer Fire Dept., the Fish and Game Association, etc.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and many long-time friends.

He was predeceased by all of his siblings: Ida Long, Gertrude Godbout, Thérèse Sabato, Irène Gagnon, Élianne Cyr, Lorraine Levesque, Émile, Armand, Raoul, Noé and Normand ''Bleu'' Levesque and Conrad Rossignol, as well as infant siblings, Emma, Alfred, Marie and Ronald Levesque.

In order for those who wish to pay their respects to Father Lucien, he will be resting at the Guy O'Regan Funeral Home, 515 Everard Daigle Blvd., Grand Falls on Monday, December 23rd from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

His funeral mass will be celebrated in the Saint-André Roman Catholic Church on Monday, December 23rd at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.
