Alan V. Johnsen

1935-2026

Alan V. Johnsen

Alan Victor Johnsen passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 31 at the Grand Falls Hospital at the age of 90 after a period of declining health.

Born and raised on a potato farm in New Denmark he was educated in local schools and a proud graduate of New Denmark High School. He had careers in both the federal public service and the military. He retired from leadership roles in each of these, including rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and being commanding officer of the 1st Royal New Brunswick Regiment. After retirement, he continued to contribute to the communities he loved in many ways including the Masonic Lodge, church council at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and president of the Canadian Infantry Association. A lover of the outdoors, he enjoyed gardening, looking after his property, and hunting and fishing trips to ''The Danes'' camp on the Gulquac. He loved to travel and see new places and people and did so his entire life. Retirement afforded him more time for that, and he and Pauline had many trips together. They took long road trips to celebrate milestones with their children and grandchildren. They went on ski holidays until well into his 80s. They flew to sunny destinations, and cruised to others. Their Christmas tree told travel tales, with decorations from around the world. His legacy will be in the many people he guided throughout his life, in his work, in his community and in his family. Many of us have learned something from him.

He is survived by his wife Pauline, his sister Marilyn, his daughter Sonja McLaughlin (George), his sons Karl (Danielle), Hans, and Jon (Bonnie) as well as 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Claudette, his brother and sister in law Robert and Wanda, his brother in law Raymond, and his parents Andy and Mary.

His funeral service will be held Saturday February 7th at 3:00 p.m. from St. Peter's Lutheran Church in New Denmark with Pastor Jonah Bruce officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.

Family will be receiving relatives and friends at the church on Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family would request a donation in his memory to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where he was a member his entire life.

Arrangements are by O'Regan's Funeral Home Ltd.
