Edmund Joseph Martin
1925-2026
The family of Edmund Joseph Martin of Fredericton, New
Brunswick, is deeply
saddened to announce his peaceful
passing on July 3rd at the age of 101.
Born in 1925 in Blue Bell, New Brunswick, to
Narcisse Martin and Marie Godreau,
Edmund enlisted at the
age of 17 and proudly served with the Royal Canadian Army
Service Corps during the Second World War. He fought in Normandy,
advanced through
France and Belgium, and was wounded while
crossing the Rhine River on the German
border. He returned
to Canada in 1945 and remained a devoted member of the Royal
Canadian Legion throughout his life. He was also an honorary
member of the Knights of
Columbus.
Edmund spent most of his life in Grand Falls,
where he was well known as both a
businessman and a
community leader. Together with the Lévesque brothers, he
founded
Martin & Lévesque Service
Station on Broadway. The business later expanded into a
motorcycle and snowmobile dealership. Later in his career, he
became a general
contractor, working on government
construction projects at the municipal, provincial, and
federal levels. He also served two years as a Town Councillor and
spent 12 years as a
member of the New Brunswick Housing
Board of Appeals.
He enjoyed being with people and especially
valued time spent fishing, hunting, and
snowmobiling with
friends. He will be remembered for his kind heart, generous
spirit,
and wonderful sense of humour.
Edmund leaves behind his beloved wife of 77
years, Jeannine Sirois, who resides at Neill
Hall in
Fredericton, New Brunswick, and their five children: Marlene Martin
(Ed Zube
deceased) ,Round Rock, Texas; Diane Martin
Birdsong (Bob Archambeault) of South
Deerfield,
Massachusetts; Suzanne Clark of Fredericton, New Brunswick; Judy
Martin
(Claude Dubé) of Glen Haven, Nova Scotia;
and Maurice Martin of Fredericton, New
Brunswick.
He is also survived by five grandchildren:
Michele Sirois (Stéphane), Chantal Birdsong,
Jacy Birdsong, Shawn Clark (Shannon), and Danielle Kennedy
(Stuart); six greatgrandchildren:
Alexandre, Cindy, Justin,
Taylor, Leah, and one eagerly awaited; as well
as several
nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his
siblings, Jean-Baptiste Martin, Rose
Therrien, Leo Martin,
and Phélima Marquis; his grandson, Charles Sirois; and his
son-inlaw,
Ed Zube.
Resting at O'Regan's Funeral Home, 515 Everard Daigle Blvd., Grand Falls with visiting hours on Wednesday, July 8th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
A Liturgy of the Word Celebration will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 8th at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Assumption Parish Cemetery in Grand Falls.
